American Biophysic's Mosquito Magnet mimics a large mammal by emitting a plume of carbon dioxide, heat and moisture, which when combined with an additional attractant, octenol, is irresistible to female mosquitoes (the ones that bite), no-see-ums, biting midges, black flies, and sandflies.
The patented counterflow technology allows the Mosquito Magnet to emit a plume of carbon dioxide, heat, and moisture to attract biting insects, while simultaneously vacuuming the insects into a net where they dehydrate and die. No electric killing grid or pesticides are used.
The unit operates 24 hours a day in order to capture day-biting, as well as night-biting blood-seeking insects. Biting insects such as the Aedes aegypti (carrier of Dengue Fever), Aedes Japonicus (carrier of the West Nile Virus), salt marsh mosquitoes, no-see-ums, midges, and sand flies are all active biters during the daylight hours.

Other lesser contributing factors can be body heat, moisture, and scent. The use of sonic or 'mosquito heartbeat' sounds are not scientifically proven to trap mosquitos. Only mosquito traps like the mosquito magnet that use carbon dioxide as the primary attractant have been scientifically and independantly proven to be effective against mosquitos and other biting insects. Traps that rely on other attractants such as sound, light and heat are ineffective compared to those that rely entirely on carbon dioxide.

The Mosquito Magnet has been designed as a safe product to use around homes. There are no open flames to generate deadly carbon monoxide. Be wary of open flame devices claiming to generate carbon dioxide. They generate dangerous carbon monoxide, and are extremely hot to touch, making them unsafe for children and or pets. Some other products use carbon dioxide tanks which are unsafe for transport and are not as readily available as propane is for your Mosquito Magnet or Gas Grill.
